What a (long) weekend! This year, as last, my uncle and I bought tickets to the Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball tournament held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA. Unlike last year, we didn’t get to actually see our favorite team (University of Kentucky) take the floor.
Kentucky was to play the final game of the schedule on Friday night which was to tip off at 9:45pm ET. However, during the overtime period of the previous game, a tornado rate as an EF-2 on the new scale hit the downtown Altanta area. Trust me when I say that watching the teflon-coated canvas roof of the Georgia dome ripple and dance up and down was quite scary.

It’s that time of year again. College basketball is in the midst of conference tournaments before next week’s start of the NCAA tournament. I’m heading to Atlanta for the start of the Southeastern Conference men’s basketball tournament to cheer on my beloved Kentucky Wildcats. I’ll try to blog some photos of the next few days.

Watching KY beat Florida State in the Music City Bowl -
PRICELESS!!!!!
Well…today marks the end of another dissappointing season for the Wildcats. Kansas downed the Cats by 12 in the 2nd Round of the NCAA tournament this afternoon. I really didn’t expect them to beat Kansas as the Jayhawks were ranked in the top 5 or so about all season and KY wasn’t even in the top 25 for most of the season. A 22-12 record might be acceptable to a lot of institutions, but anything short of a Final Four for the Cats each year is a dissappointment. Oh well…I sure hope things get better soon. Kentucky has too proud a history to become just another mediocre basketball program.
Those of you that know me very well know that I am a RABID fan of the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program (to the point that I have their logo tatooed to my left arm). I was born in KY and lived there until I was 15. Some of my fondest memories growing up were of watching the Cats play on television with my Dad while listening to Caywood Ledford (the voice of Kentucky Basketball from 1953 though 1992) call the game over the radio.
Anyway, this time of year is by far my favorite of all the different sporting events. Even in the years that KY doesn’t do well in the tournament, I love watching college basketball and the drive that so many teams have to try to win the national championship.
Last night the Cats didn’t dissapoint. They played a very scrappy Villanova team and played well throughout the entire game. I’m not totally naive enough to think that they can take out #1 seed Kansas on Sunday, which means that this season will likely end tomorrow. But I’m going to continue to enjoy the tournament for the next couple of weeks until we get to the national championship game.
